It's so Easy to Identify Different Fibers
How to Identify Different fibers? Combustion methods can be used to identify so many fibers.
1. Cotton fiber and linen fiber
Cotton fiber is just burning near the flame, burning quickly, the flame is yellow, blue smoke. When burning, the smell likes burning paper. After burning, the cotton fiber has very little powder ash and is dark gray.
Linen fiber is just burning near the flame, burning quickly, the flame is yellow, blue smoke. It gives off an ash smell and produces a small amount of off-white powder ash after burning.
2. Wool and silk
Hair (animal hair fiber, wool, cashmere, etc.) foams when it is burned by fire, and the burning speed is slow, emitting the burnt smell of burning hair. After burning, the ash is mostly shiny black spherical particles, and it easy to be crushed by the fingers.
The silk huddle in a fire, and the burning speed is slow, with hiss sound. The smell likes burning hair. After burning, the ashes form a dark brown ball and easy to be crushed by the fingers.
3. Nylon and polyester
The near-flame of the nylon is rapidly curled and melted into a white gel. It melts and blisters in the flame, and there is no flame when burned. It is difficult to continue to burn away from the flame, giving off the smell of celery. After cooling, the melt is light brown and not easily broken.
Polyester is easy to ignite, it will melt when it is close to the flame. When it burns, it will emit black smoke when it melts. The flame is yellow and emits a slightly sweet aromatic smell. After burning, the ash is dark brown and hard. It’s easy to use fingers to smash.
4. Acrylic and polypropylene
Acrylic fiber softens and melts near fire. When it catches fire, it emits black smoke. The flame is white. It quickly burns after leaving the flame, emitting the bitter smell of fire meat. After burning, the ash is irregular black lumps and is easy to be crushed with fingers.
When the polypropylene is close to the flame, it melts and is flammable. It burns slowly from the flame and emits black smoke. The upper end of the flame is yellow, the lower end is blue, and the oil smell is emitted. After burning, the ash is hard round, light yellow and brown particles, and is easy to be crushed with fingers.
5. Polyvinyl formal fiber and polyvinyl chloride fiber
Polyvinyl formal fiber, which is not easy to ignite. It melts and shrinks when it is close to the flame. When it burns, there is a little flame at the top. When the fiber melts into a gel-like flame, it increases rapidly, emits black smoke and emits aromatic smell. After burning, black beaded particles can be crushed with your fingers.
Polyvinyl chloride fiber is difficult to burn, it is extinguished from the fire, the flame is yellow, the lower end is green, white smoke, and it is irritating and pungent. After burning, the ash is a dark brown irregular lumps, and the fingers are not easily to break it.
6. Spandex and Polytetrafluoroethylene Fiber
The spandex is burned near the fire and the flame is blue. It leaves the fire and continues to melt, giving off a special pungent odor. After burning, the ash is soft and fluffy black ash.
Polytetrafluoroethylene Fiber melts near the flame, is difficult to ignite, does not burn, and the edge flame is blue-green carbonized. Decomposed after melting, the gas is toxic, the melt is a hard black bead, which is not easy to be broken with fingers.
7. Viscose fiber and bamboo fiber
Viscose fiber is flammable, burning speed is fast, the flame is yellow, and the smell of burning paper is emitted. After burning, the ash is less, and it is smooth and twisted with light gray or grayish white powder.
The smell of bamboo fiber burning is like the smell of paper burning. The ashes are black, and they will become powder with fingers.
